Pantry organizers - get your food filed away!
Posted on: June 16, 2011
Pantry organizers come in a variety of shapes, sizes and functions. Your pantry is basically a filing system - for food! So whatever pantry organisation system you go for, it doesn't necessarily need to LOOK good. Far more important is a) that you make the maximum use of the space available in your pantry and b) when you walk in you can find exactly what you were looking for - immediately!
There are several basic types of pantry organizer: shelves and shelf organizers, door and wall racks, drawers and baskets, crates and totes.
You need to find the right combination of these to suit your particular space - one size cannot fit all, and you may need to either get your measuring tape out or call a professional. The basis of your pantry organization system will be your shelving, since it is around the walls that you have the most space available. Don't forget that you need to utilize the height of your pantry to its maximum and ensure you have tall pantry shelving that reaches close to the ceiling. It would be a shame to waste that vertical space, and you can always keep things up there that you do not need regularly. You can buy pantry shelving in various dimensions, and you will probably be able to fit together a system without needing to order it specially made. However, a custom-made pantry shelving system would be the best option, since you could have it made exactly to fit the available space. This would be the more expensive option though.
You may need to devote SOME floor space to a closing pantry cabinet, or set of drawers, for those numerous small items that you need to have immediately accessible. But it is always a good idea to put drawer dividers in to make sure your things aren't rattling around and getting messy.
Also, if you install pantry drawers they will probably only be around chest height at most, so make sure the space above is devoted to shelving too.
Folding plastic crates can stand on the floor and a very common use for these is to keep loose vegetables in that do not need refrigerating, such as potatoes, onions and carrots, since the holes in the sides ensure air circulation which prevents your food from spoiling.
Totes are small baskets which are usually placed on shelves and used to store small items that may not fit in drawers - think, for example, your collection of spices, which you want to pull out all at the same time to browse through. Not necessarily food either, think about putting food mixer parts in a pantry tote - these otherwise often kick around loose on your pantry shelves and create clutter.
Don't forget to put a rack on the pantry door, too - this space is usually unused and it is a shame to waste it! Just make sure the items you keep there are secured, otherwise you will have things flying off every time you open or close the door!
We hope this information has been helpful in thinking about pantry organizers - so what are you waiting for, start organizing now!
